Eating Healthy on the Road: Tips for Staying Fueled During Travel
by Callum Allan on Dec 15, 2022
For those of us who are always on the move, it can be hard to stay healthy while travelling. But just because you're hitting the road doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your diet and nutrition goals. Here are some tips for eating well while travelling so that you can fuel your body and keep up with an active lifestyle.
Research Local Foods Before You Go
Doing a bit of research prior to leaving home is key when it comes to staying fuelled while travelling. For example, if you're planning a trip to Thailand, find out what foods are staples in Thai cuisine so that you have ideas of what dishes you'll want to try once you arrive. Understanding the local food culture will help make sure that no matter where you go, there will always be something nutritious available for you to eat.
Pack Your Own Snacks
Travel can be unpredictable, so it's always a good idea to bring along your own snacks and meals in case there isn't something healthy in reach when hunger strikes. This could include packing protein bars or bringing along pre-cut fruit and vegetables that won’t spoil after a few days of travel. If possible, try to bring along items that don’t require refrigeration and that are easy to transport—think nut butter packets or trail mix!
Look for Plant-Based Options
When dining out, focus on finding plant-based options when possible. The rise of veganism has made many restaurants more conscious of their vegan offerings—so do some research ahead of time and look up any vegetarian or vegan restaurants at your destination! You can also look for store-bought snack options like nuts or dried fruit that are both portable and nutritious.
Try Out New Recipes When Possible
If you’re feeling adventurous, why not use travel as an opportunity to try new recipes? Not only will this give your taste buds something different but it'll also allow you to expand your culinary palate! Look up recipes online before leaving home or pick up cookbooks at local markets or grocery stores during your travels so that you can experiment with new flavors wherever you go.
Eating healthy while travelling doesn't have to be complicated or frustrating; all it takes is a little bit of preparation ahead of time and knowledge of what types of dishes are traditional in certain cultures. Do some research beforehand, pack some snacks and meals in case hunger strikes unexpectedly, opt for plant-based options when possible, and don't be afraid to try something new! With these tips in mind, you'll never have an excuse not eat well while travelling!
