How to Put Down Your Phone and Improve Your Health

It's no secret that we're all addicted to our smartphones. We feel lost without them, and we often can't put them down, even for a minute. But did you know that this addiction is having a profound effect on our health? Let's take a look at how your smartphone is harming your health and what you can do about it.

 

1. Neck pain and headaches.

According to the American Chiropractic Association, " text neck " is a real thing, and it's becoming more and more common as we spend more and more time hunched over our phones. This can lead to neck pain, headaches, and even migraines. The good news is that there are some easy things you can do to alleviate the problem. First, try to be aware of your posture when you're using your phone. Sit up straight, or better yet, stand up. And when you're lying down, rest your head on a pillow so that your neck is in line with your spine. Secondly, take breaks often so that you're not looking at your screen for long periods. Set a timer for every 20 minutes or so, and when it goes off, take a break for at least a minute or two. Do some stretching, walk around, or just close your eyes and relax. Your neck will thank you!

 

2. Eye strain and vision problems.

Staring at a screen all day can cause eye strain, blurred vision, and dry eyes. To help combat these problems, the American Optometric Association recommends the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This will help reduce eye fatigue and give your eyes the chance to rest. In addition, make sure to blink often while you're looking at your screen; this will help keep your eyes lubricated and prevent dryness. And finally, try to reduce the brightness of your screen; this will also help reduce eye strain. 

 

3. Weight gain.

Sitting in front of a screen all day can also lead to weight gain. This is because we tend to snack more when we're staring at a screen (weird how that works), and we also burn fewer calories when we're sedentary. So if you want to avoid putting on some extra pounds, get up and move around regularly throughout the day; every little bit helps! And when you are snacking, try to go for healthy options like fruits or vegetables instead of unhealthy junk food. 

 

 

Your smartphone is affecting your health in more ways than you may realize. From neck pain and headaches to weight gain and vision problems, our addictions to our phones are taking a toll on our bodies. But there are things you can do to mitigate the effects of all that screen time. Be aware of your posture, take breaks often, practice the 20-20-20 rule, blink frequently, reduce the brightness of your screen, eat healthy snacks, and get up and move around regularly throughout the day. By making small changes like these, you can help reduce the negative effects of your phone addiction and improve your overall health!
